Shmita and Regenerative Agriculture
January 26 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
By regenerating the world’s soils, we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies! Agriculture is a major part of the climate problem. It currently generates 19–29% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
We’d like to invite you to join the Danforth Multifaith Commons, including the Danforth Jewish Circle (and The Climate Action Team), East End United Regional Ministry and Neighbourhood Unitarian Universalist Congregation, to a special learning event on regenerative agriculture.
Rabbi Miriam Margles will open the session with teachings from Jewish sources on the ‘Shmita’ practices of letting the land lie fallow every 7 years. We will discuss both ancient and contemporary commitments to sustainable farming. We then will welcome the Jurjans family from Trilium Organic Farm (Chris, Martin and Skye) who will speak to contemporary practices of regenerative agriculture. This will be an eye-opening and meaningful session. Please feel free to invite others who may share an interest in this topic.
An excellent introduction is the documentary ‘Kiss the Ground’ available on Netflix. You can view the trailer here.
This program is free for DJC members. Not a member? Please consider making a donation to the Danforth Jewish Circle in order to ensure we can continue to offer programs like this one. We appreciate your contribution!
