Hasidic rebbe, Rabbi Kalonymous Kalmish Shapira wrote his Torah commentary, “Sacred Fire” in the Warsaw Ghetto between 1939-1942. His teachings rarely speak directly about his experiences of suffering in the ghetto but his words are a clear response to the Holocaust and are potent spiritual and moral guides to face suffering, open the heart, forge faith and grow resilient strength. This series will be an opportunity to read a selection of his teachings, understand their context in conversation with Torah and Hasidic literature and discover resonances for our individual and collective lives during the pandemic. Learning will conclude with an opportunity for Mourner’s Kaddish and blessings for kiddush and motzi together.
