Rosh Hashanah Schedule

Erev Rosh Hashana – 7:30pm

Dawn Service – 6:30am

DJC member Emil Sher will be leading an early morning Shofar service at 6:30am, on Saturday, September 19.

Are you an early bird? The kind of early bird who would want to migrate toward the Brick Works for a dawn service on Rosh Hashanah to gather in prayer, song and conversation, come rain or shine. There is only one road that leads into the Brick Works. We will meet at the end of that short road and then walk a short distance toward the old quarry. This crack-of-dawn tradition will continue during the pandemic, with the understanding that all who attend will observe social distancing. Please bring a copy of the downloadable service booklet. In the event of a downpour (we’ll still be meeting in a drizzle), we will
gather at 6:30 a.m. via Zoom, so please register beforehand to be included. REGISTER HERE

Main Service – 10:00am

Family Service – 9:00-9:45am

Ages 0-8

Alysse Rich (our Director of Education) and special guests will lead families with children up to age 8 in creative and interactive song, prayer, teachings and stories. If you have a shofar (a real one, a crafted one, or a toy), please have it on hand for a Zoom shofar-blowing!

Tot Rosh Hashana – 10:00-10:30am

Ages 0-4

Help Tal Rock set the Rosh Hashanah table and make the holiday special with songs, stories, movement, and spiritual moments! For ages 0-4 with their grown-ups.

Youth Service – 10:00-10:45am

Ages 9-13

Join B’nei Mitzvah Teacher Mira Lyonblum for this youth service exploring the themes and prayers of Rosh Hashanah in a way that is meaningful to students aged 9-13. Grown-ups can feel free to attend the DJC Community Service while their youth attend this special program geared specifically towards them. Bring a shofar!

I Spy Rosh Hashana: Youth Programming – 11:00am-12:30pm

Ages 5-8

Ages 9-11

Ages 12-13

Join us for a visual journey through Rosh Hashanah! Discover hidden mysteries, images, and objects that celebrate the symbols and themes of the holiday. Age-appropriate interactive programming in separate Zoom rooms. A multicultural, colourful feast for the eyes and the spirit! These programs are led by DJC teen leaders and feature special guest star Sheri Cohen on the shofar!

Teen Programming with Julie-Rae King – 3:00-4:30pm

Join other teenagers in the DJC community on Zoom for a thought-provoking and interactive session to celebrate Rosh Hashanah! Together we will discuss the Visible and Invisible Identities that exist in our communities, and understand the structural impediments that persons of different race, gender, sex, and ability face when participating in community events. We will understand why recognizing and affirming all Identities is a Jewish Value and make plans for how we can personally work towards more inclusive practices in both our Jewish Community and beyond. As part of this discussion we will take on a cooking project so stay tuned to find out what ingredients to have ready in your home kitchen! Teen programming takes place in the afternoon so that teens have an opportunity to attend the Community Services in the morning.

Learning Session: Dismantling and Building Anew – 10:00am

This is a non-ticketed event. Please check your e-blast for zoom info!

**CANCELLED** Live Shofar Blowing

Due to Toronto’s recent change in outdoor gatherings limits beginning September 18th, we have sadly had to cancel the Shofar blowing on the beach.

Self-Guided Tashlich: Releasing Our Wrongs

Although we’re unable to join together in-person this year, we encourage you to participate in a self-guided tashlich at a location near water, outdoors, or in your own home. Click here for more info and a helpful handout.
We are committed to making membership financially accessible for all. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford the minimum payment, please complete a confidential Subsidy Request Form
