Yovel/Jubilee and The Concept of Betach/ Sense of Security in the Land of Israel
Led by Rabbi Miriam
This past June marked 50 years since the Six-Day War in the Middle East, a war that drastically changed the lives of Israelis and Palestinians and that altered the map of the region. A span of 50 years, called Yovel/Jubilee, is significant in Jewish sources. For some of us, this particular Jubilee year marks a celebration of fifty years since a miraculous victory, saving Israel from the brink of destruction by its Arab neighbours and reunifying Jerusalem under Jewish sovereignty. For some of us, this year is a painful commemoration of fifty years of Israeli military occupation of the Palestinians and the creation of a population of refugees. For some of us, this anniversary stirs a complex mixture of values, complicated questions and concerns. So let’s explore diverse perspective together.
Drawing on materials from ‘T’ruah: the rabbinic call for human rights’, we will be grounded in evocative Jewish sources of Yovel/Jubilee as the jumping off point for questions that engage political, moral, religious and social issues.
This 4-part series will be an opportunity to delve into 4 key relevant issues:
Dec 11: Yovel / Jubilee and Visions of Jerusalem
Jan 15: Yovel / Jubilee as a time of return– for the land, for families, for ownership
Mar 5: Yovel/Jubilee and The Concept of Betach/Sense of Security in the Land of Israel
Apr 23: Yovel / Jubilee as a time of Liberation
