Inside/Outside: Hidden Potential, Divine Sparks and Outer Shells

January 15 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, repeating until February 5, 2022

Learning and Discussion 10 – 11:30 AM; followed by Mourner’s Kaddish, Kiddush and Motzi (if on Zoom, have your wine/juice and challah ready!)

We will be exploring the same theme in both this year’s Visiting Artist workshops and in this 4-part learning series. It is our aim for the learning to inform and inspire our art-making, and for the art-making to enrich and illuminate our learning, though you are welcome to join for individual sessions or workshops.

The learning series will delve into the Kabbalistic framework of inner sparks and outer shells as a map for human growth, spiritual practice, Divine reality and creative possibility. According to Kabbalistic myth, the universe suffered a cosmic trauma during its creation, resulting in Divine sparks being scattered and hidden within the shells of physical forms – in people, nature, events and experiences. We’ll explore how this framework is used in the fruits, nuts and wine we taste at the Tu Bi’Shvat seder (New Year of the Trees). We’ll learn about approaches to elevating these sparks as a process of transforming that which is harmful and painful, rescuing the good and beautiful, and liberating potential for repair and expansion, generativity and sacred wholeness.

Each learning session will also offer art-making prompts, developed by Leah Gold, Artist in Residence, to do at home during the week. These can serve as a “sketchpad” of ideas for the arts workshop and/or your own creative work.

This program is free for DJC members. Not a member? Please consider making a donation to the Danforth Jewish Circle in order to ensure we can continue to offer programs like this one. We appreciate your contribution!
