The Netanyahus by Joshua Cohen
Facilitated by Suanne Kelman May16, 2023, 7:30-9
The Netanyahus was awarded the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The book centres on a
fictionalized account of Harold Bloom’s encounter with Benzion Netanyahu and his family, including son Benjamin, in the late 1950’s at an upstate NY college, blending history, fiction and humour.
With its tight time frame, loopy narrator, portrait of Jewish-American life against a semi-rural backdrop, and moments of cruel academic satire, The Netanyahus reads like an attempt to cross-breed Roth’s The Ghost Writer and Nabokov’s Apple Fire.
