DJC Reading Circle: More Than I Love My Life

March 9 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

More Than I Love My Life, by David Grossman
Facilitated by Derek Penslar

David Grossman once again astonishes with this powerful novel inspired by the story of his 90 year-old friend, Vera. Gili, an aspiring filmmaker, has never forgiven her mother, Nina, for leaving her and her father when Gili was a toddler. Nina was raised in Yugoslavia and hasn’t recovered from her own sense of abandonment after her mother, Vera, an anti-Nazi partisan, was held in a prison camp for refusing to renounce communism. Vera, who’s both Gili’s biological grandmother and the stepmother of Gili’s father, Rafael, is the family’s center. When Nina visits for Vera’s 90th birthday party, she asks filmmaker Rafael to make a documentary for the family about their relationship. The four talk, film, and revisit the dilapidated island prison, and their relationships shift as they grapple with Vera’s and Nina’s past. Grossman shines a light on the stories people tell themselves to explain, survive, and forgive.

Our ever-popular presenter Derek J. Penslar FRSC is the William Lee Frost Professor of Modern Jewish History at Harvard University Center for European Studies. Reading Circle regulars are always impressed by his knowledge, enhanced by an exceptional sense of humour.

Now in its twentieth glorious year, the Danforth Jewish Reading Circle is a favourite among our book loving members, bringing us together throughout the year for interesting and animated discussions about a variety of books that touch on Jewish themes. And of course, when we’re done there’s always a little nosh. After all, this is a Jewish book group! The Danforth Jewish Reading Circle is open to all – no charge for members, $10 for non-members. An RSVP is necessary as we have to cap our numbers in order to continue meeting in the warmth and intimacy of fellow DJC Members’ homes*. To attend a meeting, all you have to do is drop us a line at djcreadingcircle@gmail.com – but please do so early. Space fills up quickly and names are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive a confirmation email with time and place details.

*Due to Covid-19 we aren’t sure yet if these gatherings will be in person or via Zoom. Feel free to reserve a spot, and we will keep you posted.
