Set in 1945, this quiet movie belies a mounting tension when two strangers, Orthodox Jews, arrive at a small rural Hungarian town, transporting two mysterious wooden boxes.
Who are they? Are they relatives? Or are they acting on behalf of the Jews who used to live there? Have they come to claim the property and possessions of local Jewish families that the remaining villagers have divided up amongst themselves? The entire town is on edge as the drama unfolds. Long-kept secrets are revealed as the suspicious townsfolk try to uncover the strangers’ motivation, and its implication.
Beautifully filmed in stark black and white, this haunting film received numerous film festival awards and scored an incredible 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
