Do you have a child in Grade 5 or Grade 6? Are you starting to think about the options for Bar/Bat Mitzvah? Please join us to learn about the opportunities for Bar/Bat Mitzvah at the DJC. We will offer information about our unique B’nei Mitzvah group program as well as individual Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Pizza will be provided.
B’NEI MITZVAH PROGRAM
The Danforth Jewish Circle offers a one-year program culminating in a group B’nei Mitzvah ceremony which will be held in May of 2018. In keeping with the philosophy and approach of the DJC’s Jewish Studies Program, the B’nei Mitzvah class will address issues of Jewish identity, Tikkun Olam and social justice, and will foster connection to Jewish peers and community. At the ceremony, each student will give a d’var Torah, and the class will share the Torah portion (parsha).
Please Note: Spaces are offered first to students currently enrolled in Grade 6 of our DJC Children’s Jewish Studies Program. The registration deadline for Grade 6 students is February 28, 2018. After this date, if capacity is not reached, we will invite wait-listed students to register, as well as students from the wider DJC community.
MEMBERSHIP in the Danforth Jewish Circle is required for the year of participation in the B’nei Mitzvah program.
INDIVIDUAL B’nei Mitzvah
The DJC offers the opportunity for individual students who do not participate in the DJC group B’nei Mitzvah class to become bar or bat mitzvah as part of a DJC Shabbat morning service. Year-long study of Jewish subjects, as well as learning the skills to chant Torah, preparing to deliver a d’var Torah, and lead parts of the Shabbat morning service are done with tutors and/or group study (e.g. by joining the Downtown Jewish Community School program at the MNJCC). Students carry out a tikkun olam project, meet with a Jewish mentor, and participate in various DJC programs.
