A Sweet New Year

First things first:  Tomorrow is the deadline for advance registration for the High Holy Days!

It’s the time of year when everyone in our community comes together again. September has been a special time: nearly 90 children starting in our Children’s Jewish Studies Program, which is at capacity; a Welcome Shabbat Potluck in Withrow Park that nearly 60 people came out for, including many newcomers; another child-friendly Shabbat potluck; adult education with Rabbi Miriam leading up to the High Holy Days.  People are finding something special here.

At the same time, it’s a season of transition.  In recent weeks, we’ve had our first meetings as a new Board, including new Board members Mara Greene, Shelley Levine, and Emma Firsten-Kaufman.  We’re wrestling with big questions about how to best set up our community for sustainable success, which we’ll be talking more about at the High Holy Days.

Most pressingly, and despite our best efforts, the Board was not able to recruit a community member with substantive financial or accounting expertise to the Board last spring, when both of our finance Board members retired.  We continue to have supports in place, but this is a serious issue.  As a result, we’re aggressively recruiting for a new Board member to join mid-term.  If you or someone you know has a finance or accounting backgrounds, please consider giving back to the DJC in this way.  Contact Marlee Novak to learn more.

We’re excited to see everyone at the High Holy Days.  We feel blessed to part of this community.

Wishing everyone a sweet new year,

The DJC Board of Directors ~
Emma, Hilla, Josh, Elisabeth, Mara, Marlee, Michael, Nadya, Shelley
