Seeking and Offering Forgiveness: Text Study and Discussion
Second Day Rosh Hashana -Friday, September 14, 10:00 am.
For transgressions between one person and another, Yom Kippur does not procure atonement.
“This teaching, taken from the Babylonian Talmud, reflects a rabbinic understanding that to truly engage in the work of teshuvah, prayer alone is insufficient. Integral to the process is the work of reconciliation with the people in our lives.
During this session we will study a variety of Jewish texts-both ancient and contemporary- to see what models and insight they can offer us as we do this difficult work of making ourselves vulnerable to the other; of opening and hearts in the hopes of letting them heal.
There will be opportunity for hevrutah study (study in pairs,) as well as group conversation. I look forward to seeing you there.”
With blessings for a sweet new year,
Melissa

Jewish New Year and Light bulbs: A bright idea!
In these Holy Days of Elul we express a longing for a better world and we try to become better people. On Rosh Hashanah we reflect on the story of the creation of the world and our role in it. Rosh Hashanah is a call to reintegrate ourselves in the fabric of the natural world and to do our part to conserve the earth.
Caring for the environment continues our tradition of Bal Tashchit (do not destroy or waste), Tikkun Olam (repair the world), and our history of a Jewish people who have worked in change movements.
The Green Bayit/Green Home initiative is an outgrowth of the Listening Campaign at DJC. Many in the DJC community identified the environment as a leading concern.
The launch of our year-long calendar of events is the promotion of compact florescent light bulbs to coincide with the New Year. Look out for a light bulb demo outside the sanctuary during some of our High Holiday services.
Please click on the link below for the DJC Compact Florescent Light Bulb form, with details about how you can participate.

The DJC Book Club
…is beginning its exciting season with a bang!
The book: Suite Francaise, by Irene Nemirovsky, is both a brilliant novel of wartime, and an extraordinary historical document, hailed by European critics as a War and Peace for the Second World War.
The facilitator: Elaine Newton, York Humanities Professor, former Globe and Mail book critic, and sought-after book club speaker, returns to the DJC Book Club after a year's absence.
Sound intriguing?
Be sure to pick up a flyer in the foyer at the High Holiday services for more information about this years’ line-up. And remember to register! Just click: info@djctoronto.com or call 416-580-6303.

After the Holidays, please take a moment to consider…
As the New Year approaches and we begin to think more deeply about renewal, ritual and community, the Adult Education Committee is planning a women’s retreat in celebration of the new moon (Rosh Chodesh) and Shabbat rituals.
Our Spiritual Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh retreat will take place the weekend of October 26 – 28 at Sahayoga, which is located just two hours from Toronto in Prince Edward County. Our retreat will include learning and sharing our stories about Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh. We will join together in prayer, music, meditation, and yoga. We’ll finish by 3 p.m. on Sunday, rested and renewed in body, mind and spirit.
The retreat will take place at a beautiful retreat centre near Picton with walking trails, delicious vegetarian meals, and a sauna to relax!
For those who wish to look more closely at the facility, please visit www.sahayoga.com. Please contact Josie at 416-467-5814 or Rosie at 416-465-9627 if you are interested or have any questions. The registration form with the final registration fee will be going out in a future DJC newsletter, so watch for it!
Our committee members are very excited about this upcoming and timely venture and look forward to celebrating together.
Sincerely,
Adult Education Committee, DJC
